LOP for Custodians PDF Print E-mail

Each year, approximately 8,000 non-citizen children are detained by Immigration authorities.  If these children are detained without a parent or guardian, they are taken into the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement.  However many of these childrens have parents, relatives, or friends who could be caring for them.  ICE will allow the child to be released once a"sponsor" or "custodian" has submitted an application and their fingerprints for a background check.  Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is the only site in the City of Los Angeles that is approved to take the fingerprints of potential sponsors.  If you want to sponsor a child to be released from ORR custody and need to have your fingerprints taken, please call Betty Uribe at (213) 251-3502.

Esperanza provides legal education to these families who have a child in ORR custody.

At these orientation we provide information about:
* What you need to do as a Sponsor or Custodian
* Your rights and responsibilities in Immigration Court
* What defenses exist for children in deportation proceedings
* Attorney referrals and information about how to get legal help

We also offer individual legal consulations to families and their children.

To make an appointment to attend one of our classes, receive an individual consultation, or for general questions, please call (213) 251-3540.  We regret that we cannot always answer the phone, but please leave a message with your name and phone number, and we will call you back.
