AFFORDABLE SERVICES PROGRAM

WHAT WE DO

Our focus is on providing family and minor immigrants with legal assistance. ASP does this in two ways:

1. Through legal consultations to analyze each client’s case and identify potential forms of immigration relief.

2. Through low cost direct legal representation of immigrants before the Executive Office Of Immigration Review (EOIR) / Immigration Court and before United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

WHO WE SERVE

We provide services to adult, juvenile, and child immigrants, those with a criminal or alleged gang history, those who have been victims of crime, domestic violence, or trafficking, or with a particularly complicated immigration history. This program is available to immigrants, at each step of their immigration legal journey, living in any part of the EOIR Los Angeles’s jurisdiction or in USCIS’s District 23.

ATTEND A CONSULTATION CLINIC

We have a consultation clinic every Friday starting at 9:00 am at our offices. Our consultation fee is $60. ASP consultations require that the interested party attend the attorney consultation. Please make sure to arrive early as slots routinely fill up. At this time, ASP does not currently have capacity to accept collect calls from detention centers to conduct consultations.

More Information

  • Please make sure to bring all immigration forms and documents you may have so that an attorney may review these during the consultation.

  • When visiting Esperanza, you may park at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, on the corner of James M. Wood Blvd. and Columbia Ave., less than a block away from our offices.

  • An attorney will provide a consultation, evaluate the case, provide guidance, answer a person’s questions and identify possible forms of immigration relief. An attorney may also refer a person to appropriate social service or consumer protection agencies. If applicable, we will provide a printed low-cost quote for representation services. Prices quoted are flat-fees per type of relief.

SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION

If you live in a remote location and don’t want to risk our clinic being full when you arrive, you may schedule consultation for a non-clinic day at our Los Angeles offices. We require the consultation fee of $60 to schedule a consultation at our Los Angeles office.  To schedule an appointment, please come to our office during our regular office hours.

Every Monday, we provide consultations in our San Bernardino office. These are by appointment only. If you wish to schedule an appointment for a consultation in our San Bernardino office, Call Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project at (213)-251-3505 and ask to schedule an ASP Consultation. Our consultation fee is $60. Please make sure to have the interested party’s name, contact information, and language preference.

  • If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please let Esperanza know 24 hours in advance.

Before attending a Clinic or scheduling a consultation, please be aware that:

  • ASP is not designed to obtain legal representation at a short notice (such as 4 weeks or less before your next hearing before an Immigration Court Judge).

  • We are unable to offer representation to individuals residing outside of EOIR Los Angeles Jurisdiction and USCIS District 23. However, we are still able to provide a consultation.

  • At this time, we are unable to represent individuals in detention or for bond hearings, or petitions for student, employment, or investor visas.

AFTER YOUR CONSULTATION

Our office will inform the party within 1 week if we are able to provide representation, based on the stage their case is at, and our current caseload. Once we have informed the party of our ability to provide representation and they have had time to consider our quote, they may contact us to let us know of their interest in Esperanza providing representation for their case. At that point, and if we still have capacity, we will schedule an appointment to initiate representation. If we do not have capacity, we can provide referrals or ask that they contact us after their upcoming hearing so we can re-evaluate our capacity at that point.

Payment
We require at least ¼ of the quoted price upon signing of a legal representation agreement. We offer monthly payment plans for the remaining balance. Payments may be made in cash, money order, or credit card. We are unable to accept payment by personal check.

FAQ

WHERE IS ESPERANZA LOCATED? DO YOU HAVE PARKING?

We are located at 1530 James M. Wood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90015. We have parking available at the Church of the Immaculate Conception parking lot, located on the corner of James M. Wood Blvd. and Columbia Ave., about half a block from our offices.

WHAT ARE YOUR OFFICE HOURS?

Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are not open on Saturday, Sunday, any Federal holidays, or certain Catholic holidays. Consultation Clinics are on Fridays. Please call (213) 251-3505 for more information regarding clinic and scheduled consultation days.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRICES? DOES ASP WORK ON RETAINER OR ON AN HOURLY RATE?

The price of representation depends on the type of immigration relief and circumstances of each person. ASP charges on a flat-fee rate, not retainer or hourly rates. All fees are earned when charged. We require at least ¼ of the quoted price upon signing of a legal representation agreement.

DOES ASP OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?

Yes! Our standard payment plan allows you to split the remaining balance into monthly payments. For your convenience, we encourage you to sign up for our convenient automated credit card payment plan.

I NEED REPRESENTATION FOR MY NEXT HEARING. CAN ASP ATTEND MY NEXT HEARING?

ASP is not designed to obtain legal representation at a short notice (such as 4 weeks or less before your next hearing before an Immigration Court Judge). Once we sign a legal representation agreement, we will provide representation before the EOIR to the extent our agreement reflects this arrangement.

I RESIDE OUTSIDE THE LOS ANGELES AREA, CAN ASP PROVIDE REPRESENTATION IN MY CASE?

Because Esperanza is a non-profit organization, and due to the reduced fees ASP charges, we have limited resources which do not permit us to provide representation outside of the Los Angeles EOIR Jurisdiction or USCIS’s District 23 (This means that Esperanza currently only provides assistance to individuals residing in Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Kern, and Santa Barbara Counties).

I LACK THE ECONOMIC RESOURCES TO FUND MY IMMIGRATION DEFENSE. DOES ASP PROVIDE NO COST (PRO BONO) REPRESENTATION?

ASP is designed primarily to serve individuals who are underserved as a result of being aged out of grant-funded pro bono representation or priced out of private counsel representation. We are able to provide referrals to other organizations that may have funds available to provide pro bono representation for your consideration.

ARE ASP SERVICES ONLY AVAILABLE TO CATHOLICS?

While ASP and Esperanza is a project of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. the social service arm of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, ASP helps all people who qualify for the program regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, religion, physical handicap, or physical condition. You do not have to be Roman Catholic to obtain a consultation, guidance, or legal representation from Esperanza or ASP.
